For as long as she can remember, Heather knew her path in life would be a creative one. When she was younger, you were bound to find her curled up in her room doodling, putting together fun collage books, thinking up new fashions to create or playing her flute. Not much has changed since those carefree days of childhood and you’re just as likely to find her doing the same things today! When she was growing up her mother always told her “you can be anything you want to be” and those simple words of encouragement ignited her imagination for the possibilities that lay ahead.
Heather received a B.F.A in Fashion Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design and moved out to San Francisco shortly after graduating to start a career in the fashion industry. The time she spent working in the industry was invaluable and it played a significant role in shaping the designer she is today. She was fortunate to work with a talented group of artists, travel all over the world and get an in-depth look at the creative process of designing and manufacturing.
During this time Heather discovered her passion for surface design and that discovery changed her life.
After enjoying a successful career in the fashion industry, Heather took the knowledge and experience she gained and launched her own surface design company under the name of Hang Tight Studio. She’s always had a soft spot for all things vintage, whether it’s fabric, furniture or clothing and that influence shows through in her designs. Heather’s diverse style bridges the gap between retro and contemporary design and color is a major source of inspiration for her. She loves creating a wide variety of designs including vintage inspired geometrics, fanciful florals and whimsical creations filled with fun characters and motifs. Each design represents a piece of her personality and working on a variety of patterns keeps her constantly inspired.
Shortly after launching Hang Tight Studio in 2000, Heather relocated to the beautiful seaside town of Kennebunk, Maine. She lives and works out of her 1850’s farmhouse, surrounded by a menagerie of furry & feathered “kids” including 2 cats, a duck, a bunny and her studio sidekick Emma Jean (a Sussex Spaniel). Nestled in her brightly lit lime green studio, Heather spends her days dreaming up new designs, connecting with other artists and whipping up fun creations behind her sewing machine. She’s beyond excited to be a part of the Modern Yardage family and to share her designs with you. She hopes they ignite your imagination and inspire you to sew your own fabulous creations!
